What is an llms.txt file, and why does it matter now?
An llms.txt file serves as a straightforward roadmap that directs Large Language Models (LLMs) to a website's core content. Its purpose is to streamline how AI tools locate, understand, and reference a business's most critical pages.
Think of it as the equivalent of robots.txt, but built for AI rather than search engines. This plain-text file is placed at the root of your domain and tells AI systems what your business does, which pages matter most, and how your content should be referenced when an AI assistant answers a question about your industry. This text file will stop the AI from hallucinating about your business.
A few facts worth knowing:
AI-driven answers skip the click. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews a question about your industry, the AI reads a synthesized answer out loud or on screen. There is no list of ten blue links to scroll through. If your site is not structured for that retrieval, a competitor's site gets cited instead, every time that question comes up.
