What does Google have to say about Mobile?

Google’s latest blog post on June 11th included common mistakes found on mobile sites. In addition they hinted that their next update will penalize sites that perform poorly on mobile. Which also means that sites that do well on mobile will get a solid ranking boost.

Here’s how Google reps explained it, according to Planet Ocean’s July 13 report:

“To improve the search experience for smartphone users and address their pain points, we plan to roll out several ranking changes in the near future that address sites that are misconfigured for smart phone users.”

Google will penalize:

  • Faulty redirects
  • 404 error messages
  • Slow or unresponsive pages
  • Incorrectly handling of Googlebot-Mobile
  • Unplayable videos on smartphone devices

Here are best practices for mobile websites:

  • Quick load time – make your mobile page render in under 1 second.
  • Keep It Simple – with navigation, layout and design elements
  • Prioritize Content – move your top 3 to the homepage
  • Focus on Conversion – remember users are not browsing your mobile site
  • Take advantage of mobile features like “click to call.”
  • Design your mobile site for “touch.” (don’t make tabs “clickable”)
  • Go Vertical with tabs
  • Minimize Scrolling
  • Be Concise
  • Focus on Simple Usability
  • Page size matters
  • Crunch images
  • Use Youtube and HTML5 to render Videos
